Starting with the 2000 model year panthers have been factory equipped with a seatbelt warning "BeltMinder" system. This feature is controlled through the Lighting Control Module (LCM) on 2000 models or the Restraints Control Module (RCM) for 2001+, and alerts the driver if their safety belt is unfastened via a warning lamp and audible chime. For 2003+ the passenger front safety belt was also included to the feature.

Although it is highly recommended (including by your local law enforcement ;) ) for obvious reasons that you and your occupants do wear their seat belts some wish to disable this feature.

Below are the Ford factory service manual procedures to disable or re-enable the '00-'02 and '03+ BeltMinder systems, as well as a description of it's operation for each variation. This is also applicable to other Ford models of comparable model years.

One-time fast disable applicable for all 2000+:

If at any time the driver/*front passenger quickly buckles then unbuckles, the BeltMinder feature for that seating position is disabled for the current ignition cycle.
**The BeltMinder feature will re-enable during the same ignition cycle if the occupant buckles and remains buckled for approximately 30 seconds.
**2003+ only
Confirmation is not given for the one time disable.

Permanent disable instructions

'00-'02:

Belt Minder Deactivating/Activating

Preparation
  1. Before deactivating/activating the belt minder, set the parking brake.
  2. Place the transmission range selector lever in P (PARK) (automatic transmission) or the NEUTRAL position (manual transmission).
  3. Place the ignition switch in the OFF position.
  4. Close all the vehicle doors.
  5. Unbuckle the driver safety belt.
  6. Place the parklamps/headlamps switch in the OFF position. (If the vehicle is equipped with autolamps, the autolamps must be disabled first.)

Deactivating/Activating
  1. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position. (Do not start the engine.)
  2. Wait until the safety belt warning lamp turns off (approximately one to two minutes).
    • Note: Steps 3 through 5 must be completed within 60 seconds or the procedure must be repeated.
  3. Buckle then unbuckle the safety belt three times, ending with the safety belt unbuckled. This portion of the procedure can be done before or during belt minder warning activation.
  4. Turn the parklamps/headlamps on then off.
  5. Buckle then unbuckle the safety belt three times ending with the safety belt unbuckled. After this step the safety belt warning lamp will be illuminated for three seconds.
  6. Within seven seconds of the safety belt warning lamp turning off, buckle then unbuckle the safety belt. This will enable the belt minder if disabled or disable the belt minder if enabled.
  7. The following sequence of events confirm the belt minder is enabled.
    • flashing of the safety belt warning belt lamp four times per second for three seconds
    • three seconds with the safety belt lamp off
    • flashing the safety belt lamp four times per second for three seconds again
  8. The safety belt lamp flashing four times per second for three seconds provides confirmation that the belt minder is disabled.
  9. After confirmation, the deactivation/activation procedure is complete.

  7. Confirmation of enabling the beltminder is provided to the customer by the airbag warning lamp flashing four times per second for three seconds, followed by three seconds again. Confirmation of disabling the beltminder is provided to the customer by the airbag warning lamp flashing four times per second for three seconds.
  8. Customer programming of the beltminder is automatically exited after completion of the customer confirmation.
  9. The beltminder will automatically exit the programming mode without changing its enable status if Step 6 does not occur within 10 seconds of the end of Step 4.

  11. Performing Steps 1-12 using only the passenger safety belt will permanently enable/disable the passenger belminder feature. Only one side (driver or passenger) can be enabled/disabled per key cycle. While programming the driver side, any activity on the passenger safety belt will abort the programming sequence.
  12. While programming the passenger side, any activity on the driver safety belt will terminate the programming sequence.
  13. The programming sequence will abort if a system fault occurs that requires the illumination of the restraints indicator lamp (RIL) at any time during programming or confirmation.

Belt minder
The BeltMinder feature is a supplemental warning to the safety belt warning function. This feature provides additional reminders by intermittently sounding a chime and illuminating the safety belt warning lamp in the instrument cluster when the driverís safety belt is unbuckled. The BeltMinder feature uses information from the passenger occupant classification sensor to determine if a front seat passenger is present and therefore potentially in need of a warning. To avoid activating the BeltMinder feature for objects placed in the front passenger seat, warnings will only be given to large front seat occupants as determined by the passenger occupant classification sensor.
Both the driverís and passengerís safety belt usages are monitored and either may activate the BeltMinder feature. The warnings are the same for the driver and the front passenger. If the BeltMinder warnings have expired (warnings for approximately 5 minutes) for one occupant (driver or front passenger), the other occupant can still activate the BeltMinder feature.
  • The driverís and front passengerís safety belts are buckled before the ignition switch is turned to the ON position or less than 1-2 minutes have elapsed since the ignition switch has been turned ON...
    • The BeltMinder feature will not activate.
  • The driverís or front passengerís safety belt is not buckled when the vehicle has reached at least 5 km/h (3 mph) and 1-2 minutes have elapsed since the ignition switch has been turned to ON...
    • The BeltMinder feature is activated - the safety belt warning light illuminates and the warning chime sounds for 6 seconds every 30 seconds, repeating for approximately 5 minutes or until the safety belts are buckled.
  • The driverís or front passengerís safety belt becomes unbuckled for approximately 1 minute while the vehicle is traveling at least 5 km/h (3 mph) and more than 1-2 minutes have elapsed since the ignition switch has been turned to ON...
    • The BeltMinder feature is activated - the safety belt warning light illuminates and the warning chime sounds for 6 seconds every 30 seconds, repeating for approximately 5 minutes or until the safety belts are buckled.
